Palomares Fine Arts Program

Palomares Fine Arts Program is a school-wide K-5 program designed to familiarize students with famous artists, composers and their works, with a focus on specific elements of art and music. Each lesson utilizes a theme to examine the similarities and differences between the featured artists and composers. Using a time line, these artists are related to the major historic and social events of their times, so contemporary young people may come to understand that the arts teach, enrich, empower and connect us to one another.

The two-part lessons integrate other curricular areas such as geography, math, science and other arts. Through this broad view, students begin to understand that art reflects history and nature, as well as human experience.

The first part of the lesson features one work of art and one musical selection by the chosen artist and composer. Teaching leaders, called docents, use open-ended questions that encourage students to express their own opinions about the works and concepts being studied.

The second, hands-on, part of each lesson offers several follow-ups that extend into various artistic media and performance, as well as options in language arts and science.
